A Maryland bridge is a dental marvel that combines functionality and aesthetics to replace missing teeth. This innovative solution comprises a metal framework featuring a porcelain tooth fused to the front of the framework. The resulting structure mimics a real tooth, complete with two metal wings on the sides. These metal wings are meticulously prepared with a porous surface, allowing them to receive a bonding agent that securely attaches them to the back sides of the adjacent teeth, effectively bridging the gap left by a missing tooth. While Maryland bridges offer numerous advantages, there are a couple of aesthetic considerations related to the use of metal. Firstly, natural teeth possess a degree of translucency. Consequently, the metal backing bonded onto the backside of the front teeth may cause those teeth to undergo a slight darkening, causing them to no longer perfectly match the color of the other front teeth.
