It's important to note that unlike cold sores, canker sores do not appear on the surface of your lips, and they are not contagious. They commonly occur inside your mouth, including on or beneath your tongue, inside your cheeks or lips, at the gum line, or on your soft palate. Some individuals may notice a tingling or burning sensation a day or two before the sores become visible.
